I have a BD Covert 22 and I've found its just a bit too small. I find that its a challenge to fit everything I need in it. Also, the handle of my Voile shovel is too long for the shovel compartment.

What size do you use for day trips?

Plenty of room for me for day trips.

I used a marmot fireball 25 last season and felt it could have been a little bigger. I am working on streamlining the gear, but think the 26-30L range would be better for about 90% of the time. I am really looking into picking up one of the Pro II Dakine packs.

Been using an older Dakine Helipro for the last 7-8 years, and besides a lack of pockets it has worked perfect. Could be a bit more comfortable though..

Arc'Teryxy Silo 40 (2440 cu. in. / 40 liters) for backcountry

Covert 32L Avalung pack. Do you take detach the shovel from the handle? That is how I make mine fit, but it is tight. I have to put that in before I put stuff in the main compartment. I actually wish it was just a bit bigger. But it does seem to fit all of my crap pretty well and also carries well.

Yeah I detach it. It only sticks out about an inch. I have plenty of room on the down but on the skin up when I'm shedding clothing and stuff its pretty tight. I wish I would have held out for the 32L but the Steepandcheap deal was too tempting at the time.

Pro II is highly recommended. At 26L it's perfect for day tours, well organized, carries well in board or split mode - not really anything I would change, other than having some sort of bungee or mesh pocket on the outside for quick access to an extra layer, but that's a minor detail.

I bought a REI pack with 25L last season and it was too small for me so I returned it. I'm looking for a slightly bigger day pack too.

Pricey but I like the features, 35L might be a little too much though, not sure. But then again, I've been using this Stone Age DaKine Outbound around 50L for everything and just make use of all the compression straps for day trips.

Is there any other good daypacks out there that you know of and/or recommend?

I've been using a dakine heli pro for the last few seasons but i'm probebly going to get a bigger pack for the coming season since i'm gonna spend it i chamonix and want to bring climbing gear up the mountain.

the short list right now is:
osprey kode 38, great fit, like the design, not alot of buckles that can be in the way or ice up.

haglöfs rand 38, slightly more expensive, slightly heavier, and alot buckles and shit that can get in the way, but seems alot more bomber.

gonna make my final decision this week.

What's up with the kitchen sink packs Am I the only minimalist?
We're talking day tour here right Light breakfast early, snack on the way, lunch on top, home for dinner. I guess you guys are doing bigger terrain than I am.
If your packing mountaineering hardware(rope, harness, helmet, ax, etc.) I can see 30L, but for me, basic touring gear (extra layer, hydrobag, shovel, probe, crampons, skins, mini 1st aid/repair kit, pbj & pbr for the summit) fits in my slack country pack, 11litre dakine heli. mp3 phone, camera, snaks, multi tool, thin gloves/liners all in the coat pockets. For a bigger tour sans overnight gear my old & tattered 24l burton BC pack fits all that + boots when I use light weight trail shoes in the spring.

Light is good
