About the BD packs, the problem can be easily fix with a knife and some common sense to redirect the box off the shoulder.
Well it's simple to go one step further get a: ABS (Avalanche Ballon System) packs reduce the likelyhood of being buried in an avalanche by decreasing your density. The theory of inverse particals. This is achieved by inflating 150L airbags built into a backpack. There has been a lot of talk wether wear this pack systems is worth while or not. The fact is these packs have saved many lives in the past few years and many more deaths could have been prevented had these systems been used. Refinements have been made and competive systems have emerged (SnowPulse) now is the time to start looking at the value of these packs.

Cost: $1200-$1400
Weight: 5-6lbs
15-55L bags available

The ABS system uses a 550gram CO2 canister + a pyro trigger handle (replacement canister and handle is about $40

The Snowpulse system uses compressed air and can be refilled for free. Its also airplane safe.

I thought the intake box had to sit in the designed position (within the mesh fabric) in order to adequately draw in sufficient air from the snowpack. If you move it further into the pack and off the shoulder I would be concerned you would limit the intake of the Avalung.
