the rei pulks are fine for smaller tours. i have seen them and worked with them, but imo the sleds cannot take being beaten when you are on a real trip. if i was on anything shorter than a week i would use a big pack , not a sled. the sled is for hauling, and i mean hauling big and heavy gear for a variety of purposes, approach to big wall then descent. tons of gear. you can use the rei but it wont take the same abuse. the plastic is strong, its not a toy, but with rocks trees and weight make it too light for what is needed or warranted for using a sled.
crossed poles in the back are more for when you make it yourself. weaker gear needs the support. straight poles of the fjellpulk are strong enough to ascend and descend the mean stuff with full control. think about trollers at ski resorts.
all i gotta say is the right gear for the right trip. most of the time a 100 liter pack is just easier and better, but when its not think big.
