I carry the Sunnto Ambit: What I like about an GPS/Altimeter watch is data (elevation and/or UTM coordinates) is instantly available. Meaning, I can quickly glance at my wrist watch and a map to find my location, without breaking stride. No stopping and fumbling to open a pocket and turn on a an IPhone or GPS.

I have had several altimeter watches. Highgear, then Suunto, back to Highgear XT7. I think the GPS models loose their charge to fast, but I love the data. XT7 was not intuitive to use, but with practice I am very pleased with the performance. I don't know if you can still find them.
I had a lot of hassle with the Suunto. They had the watch several times for warranty work and when the warranty period ended they wanted enough to fix the old watch to buy a new one.
I own some Garmin gps equipment. I don't have their gps watch, but I would give it a shot if it were competitive on price.
