read up on sims hybrid core. as they stated its a poplar core with two beech stringers down the center for torsional ridgidity and insert retention. sounds like you wouldnt have a problem then splitting that. ive seen people split boards that have been routed in the center to lighten them up and you have to fill the cavity with epoxy.
