I am making a split. I dont have the kit yet but I do have a snowboard in half. I wanted to cut it before I spent the money (hopefully not a horrible idea) I havent done much research but I was pretty confident in my ability to cut stuff in half.

Its an (04?) burton code 162 that hasnt been used more than a couple times. I didnt even think of their stupid insert pattern until i started hitting them with the saw. I used a jig saw, the cut inserts and all came out well, better than expected.

after using some epoxy and spray enamel i still think the cut is acceptable. The boards touch underneath one of the bindings and than spread. I can split the difference between the tip and tail so there is about a 1/16" gap at both ends.

Based off of this description should I buy the split kit and put this thing back together?

I have a buddy who has a split made using the split kit (he didnt make it) he bought it at a used shop. the cut on his looks to do the same kinda thing (meet in some places and have a 1/16" gap in others) He has had his for two full years plus whatever use it got before, and he said it is a little difficult to slide it apart and back together, it just takes a touch of force, but is perfectly functional.

so I ordered up the kit today (excited)

A big question i have will come when I get to choose the stance. Before cutting the board i rode on the furthest apart inserts. I think the board is made for pipe, so it is a little centered. The board has a lot of tail, way more than the other board i ride (157).

I wanted to move the stance back maybe a 1/2'-1" but after second thought. I was thinking that maybe going outside the factory inserts might seriously mess with the geometry. Any thoughts?

Hah, I made the same mistake with my Burton Supermodel, but the inserts destroyed my saw and I had to switch to an abrasive blade. Next time I'm using this metal cutting circular saw blade called the "Metal Devil" from McMaster that has enough of a pattern to clear wood chips as well.



I originally mounted in a near-centered stance and it was horrible in powder. I guess it depends what your needs are, but I'd tend to say setback for BC riding. I ended up re-drilling and re-mounting mine.

I second that. I split a Burton Frontier, which was already directional, and even set it back a bit behind the factory insets. I knew it would ride better in the powder, which is basically all I see, but I was also concerned with the pressure I would be exerting on the DIY screws for my front binding by constantly pulling to keep my tip up, being a pretty big dude.

I ended up centering my stance over the factory inserts. It worked well The board is considerably bigger than my normal board so it floats just fine.
