Sorry SF, should've been more specific. experiments have shown that objects much, much smaller than the ferring are enough to break up the eddies on some cars.
Oh, and since I forgot last time. Excellent work!!!
Some thought this was the phenomena that caused the Tacoma narrows bridge to fail, but I like the negative damping theory on this site better http://www.vibrationdata.com/Tacoma.htm

I fixed that for ya! The rest of the time there's other stuff to talk about!
Shep - thanks for the idea. I saw that little wing thingy and I couldn't figure out if I was supposed to buy 10 of them to cover whole front crossbar. But actually, between the pads and the straps I didn't even have room up there for one of them.
I think the howling is really bad for my particular setup because the roof on my car is rounded. The front crossbar is actually a few inches lower than the rear crossbar because of the roof's shape. That put's the roof directly in the path of the eddies so they drive vibrations in the roof very strongly rather than just floating off into space. I don't know.. that's my theory, anyway.
By the way, the acetone didn't work... I tried a little test spot on the ferring and it clouded up the plastic. But I did figure out how to reverse the plastic so that the logo isn't showing! And you can all rejoice - my car is still yellow!
