I have finished with my write up on splitting my own board. Check it out and let me know what you think. All in all the process was really easy. Only minor problems were encountered, but nothing that would keep me from splitting another board.

bump - to move to the DIY forum

I just split my first board, an old Burton Johan 163. It took me about 3-3 1/2 hours total. I countersunk and pressed each of the inserts into the base and then applied p-tex, scraped, sanded and waxed. I also epoxied in every one of the inserts to attempt to gain even better holding power. Some in the various DIY threads indicated trouble with some of the inserts not holding well, so I thought why not use some quick set epoxy to really lock them into the board layers. I found the drill bit sizes in the voile instructions not exactly the same caliper diameter as the inserts, so I checked the real diameter of each screw, bolt or insert before drilling and got the exact or closest real diameter of bit. I know that without the centerline edges that this board may not be as stiff as some real split boards, but the Johan is one of the most stiff boards of its day, so I am sure it will be fine. I plan on trying this as I have it currently set up for use with plate bindings and my soloman super mountain 9's. Once I try it on some fitness geared outings (I'm new to split, so there needs to be some fitness and learning curve before I'm ready to go deep into the bc) I will assess if I need to switch to my burton si bindings and boots, add a modified hiback for a hybrid binding or ride as currenly built. Thanks to all for your intuitive DIY instructions various setups and continued chatter that has really got me well into the learning curve.
