Hey. I am new to this forum. I found it while researching to split my board. It seems like a great forum!

I will be splitting an older Burton fish:



I love riding this board I just hope it will continue to have enough pop after I am done.

I will be making my own components for attachment etc and I made up the first parts today.



I stuck with voile style hooks but slightly modified the design.
I am pretty happy with them but I did make one mistake. Can anybody notice it?

The next part I will be doing is the pucks. Anybody care to weigh in on best material type?
I can get UHMW(polyethylene) or Acetal (Delrin) The Acetal is harder to find in correct stock size so therefore more expensive and more waste.
The UHMW is much easier to get but I have concerns with its strength. Anybody got an opinion?

ultra high molecular weight Pe wight 0,9 kg dm3
delrin - POM wight 1,3 - 1,4 kg dm3


Pom is perfect for milling - i think uhmw - Pe is lighter but not so frendly to work as POM.
When you need the lightes pucks - make as CFK. it is hard to build a mould - but it works...

hole looks close to the vertical section, maybe tight for a nut to get in there....

Burton I appreciate the science on the two material types. It seems like others have used delrin (this thread has recently seen some new information added:http://splitboard.com/talk/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=8065). Ultimately the difference in densities will probably mean pretty close masses for something puck sized. I am not sure what you mean by CFK? Actually I see that it is an acronym mostly used in Germany. I suppose I would need and injection molder to utilize this tech. Seeing as I will not be making a lot of them I think it wouldn't be very time efficient for me!

I do have the CNC files saved but the small problem that I alluded to is that they are exactly backwards to standard hooks.

I designed them from the top looking down and then machined them from the bottom! So unfortunately these hooks wouldn't fit with standard voile holes in the board.

I may redo do them yet in which case I will keep you in mind for a set.

Cool hooks! Backwards on a DIY shouldn't matter much unless you've already drilled out the holes as per the Voile templates. I really like cutouts on your hooks though. I've seen some folks cut the standard hooks down to save weight, but your cutouts allow for options like tie points on a rescue sled, etc... Considered making hooks that don't pivot? I don't turn mine in for skinning and don't know of too many others who do. Also thought about doing a production run? I'd be interested in toying around with some.

Beautiful work! Yea no problem if you didn't already drill holes in your board.

I was wodering if the board would ride better if the pucks locked together as well as the clips. More is more.

Yeah hooks! Backwards shouldn't matter on a DIY. Nice work.

Well, unfortunately my local plastic supply only carries Delrin in round stock.
I can get the UHMW in correct stock sizes but I have convinced myself that it is worth it to get the Delrin.
I have found it available for order in small quantities at McMaster Carr. So it looks like I will have to wait on getting started on the pucks.

I am not sure about production runs! Eventhough my job is quite flexible for building things (I teach High School mostly Metalworking) I still have quite a bit of other things that compete for my time. I also don't feel that my "product" is quite refined yet.

You can get delrin off of ebay preety easy.

Thanks I did make the board. Surfed it for years and just sold it to a guy on Maui as a wallhanger. I'll check out the web site you sent.

Saving grams on clips will only make you nuts as you climb with a one pound ice buildup on each board. Check out skibuilders.com and build an ultra light split from scratch. Board crafter has some cool how to vids.
