I've read that epoxy doesnt stick to packing tape so I was wondering if I could wrap a small piece of tape around a 3/16" drill bit and swab the tape with some epoxy. Then, insert that into the hole where the tip/tail rivets go through. Besides sealing it up the inside of the hole, I made a small boo boo I'd like to get perfect again. Could I leave the bit in there for a few hours then pull it out with a coated inside hole?
It dosnt stick to tape. But you could tape the bottom fill the hole with epoxy then just re-drill it once its gone off to get a tighter fit. And it will seal the wood.
I don't really understand the question, but... Don't leave the bit in with the epoxy, it may damage the board and the seal when it is removed. A thin coat will seal the hole and if it is to tight drill it out. Unless the board is de-laminating at the hole you shouldn't need epoxy, just wood sealant.
You want all the epoxy to fill the hole, all at the same time, with equal consistency. If you epoxy and re-epoxy a hole you will be creating layers, which may peel apart. You want all epoxy to cure together at the same time (24-48 hours). After that you can go back and redo the hole by chipping or drilling it out. Ideally all epoxy should go onto a clean & dust free (or debris) surface, if not the epoxy may not setup correctly, and be weak. Also watch out for air bubbles, as they will make the epoxy considerably weaker.

I got curious about what epoxy would be best in cold wet situations so I emailed West Systems. They supposedly make some of the best stuff out there so I thought I'd share this. The guy recommended G/Flex instead of the 206 and 105 that most people seem to like.
"I think our G/flex epoxy would work best in this situation. G/flex will adhere well to all those materials, and when the temperature changes from hot to cold, will be able to absorb the different coefficient of thermal expansions that the materials exhibit differently without cracking. It also comes pre-thickened (G/flex 655) so there is no need to thicken it like you may need to with the 105 system."
