I was using 1/4" stainless tubing for two years until the Phantoms came out. As long as one tours via Dynafit toe, the tubing saves some weight, and is plenty strong. In fact, I have used 1/4" aluminum rod as well, also light and plenty strong. Both of these are DIY replacements as well. But remember, only for ride mode.
Barrows is right, anything to stop the plate moving. KISS is what I want in the BC.
