I'm not sure what the actual benefit of these soles will be. Maybe they will offer marginally benefits when walking in snow or scrambling on rock, but they are not what are required for touring. The type of Vibram sole needed for touring are the very stiff mountaineering soles which take a mountaineering crampon and have a squared off toe which allows step kicking in hard snow and edging ability on rock.

No doubt and I bet bcr, jimw, and plark agree. I think their responses are a show of encouragement because of the progress. With a little feedback, who knows what improvements could be made?
I'd be suprised if Burton or K2 really want to go all the way and provide a touring soft boot with a stiff Vibram sole. I would have thought the market is too small and the production costs of putting a "proper" Vibram sole on their boot would be prohibitive. I think Burton/K2 like to use the word "Vibram" as a marketing tool rather than as a serious backcountry addition to their boots (...check out the little crampons on last years Driver boots - can't imagine they were much use to anyone).
Hopefully I'm wrong as it would save me some money - as mentioned before I had a Vibram sole fitted to my Burton Driver boots last year. So far, I think it's a perfect (if costly) solution.
I didn't find your post regarding the custom sole on the Burton drivers. Were you able to fit a mountaineering sole with crampon bales, or did you just get the benefit of better step-kicking and edging? If your custom soles have bales, do you use the Voile mountain plate, or do you still have to use high back bindings? Tx..

How to recognize new and older Driver X model? Is there different only in weight? Maybe Burton proposed for new 2007 Driver X different thicknes of synthetic leather? And quality is the same?
