Spotted these for $10. Appears that the flex point in the toe is in the hinged toe block, which is removable along with the heel block. Possibly modify & swap out the whole sole for some tech sole blocks? Wonder if they'd then be stiff enough to stay in some plate bindings? It would ditch some weight, they're pretty beefy... Though the toe on them is an old school 3 pin toe... kinda fits in with the idea you were kicking around libtechsplit.... Cuff's a bit on the short side though, definitely way stiffer over all than my Koflach Oxygens.
i saw a pair of those in the Golden second hand shop this summer, but they were too small for me, so i didnt really think about them too much... they are a bit heavy, hey? Still, for ten bucks, thats a good score. My current idea is to spend 300 on the Garmont excursions at MEC. Same weight as the TLT 5's , but 400 dollars less. As with the excursions, with those you could use a voile plate binding with a highback, but add a top binding strap and some mechanical forward lean resistance... sounds gimmicky i know, but i swear i can make it work, lol.
i like the little pulley blocks for the laces on those.
