Some areas received well over 8″ of rain and there was a lot of flooding and destruction. It was the busiest 911 dispatch had been since Tropical Storm Irene. While all this rain was wreaking havoc, the tail end of the storm went cold and dropped well over 12″ of thick, heavy snow above 2,000′. Whiteface in NY topped out the scale with 34″! The majority of the snow came Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. I went to the local resort early Sunday morning to see what I could slide on. I pulled in the parking lot and it was 38º and pouring rain. No snow in sight. After about 20 minutes of hiking up a ski trail, there was a couple inches on the ground and I was able to throw on my skins. The snow quickly got deeper, and by the time I topped out, everything that was drenched by the rain was frozen solid by below freezing temps and a strong wind. A couple laps later and my legs were fried. The snow was sticky and heavy and every step up the mountain probably had 10 lbs of snow stuck to my board. It was a really fun morning and a great way to end the season. By far the latest into spring that I have ridden fresh snow on the east coast. Apparently this was the coldest it had been on Memorial Day weekend since 1956! Here is a short video from Sunday.
