    The Good
Cbalke found a View New Posts plugin that I just enabled.

To view the page you can either go to your profile/forums/subscriptions or select the profile shortcut button in the upper right corner, then select subscriptions.

This will take you to a page that shows all the threads in the forum with new posts.

    The not so Good
Since the forum was converted (not started from scratch) it shows 470 pages of topics with new posts. While there is a Mark all as Read option, due to the number of topics/replies it does not work.

So, I think if you just utilize the first page, eventually it will be current and show you the topics/replies in all the various forums.

Its not perfect but it’s a step closer.

    Thanks @cbalke!

    The imperfection. . .
I’ve found on this Subscriptions page, if you click on the timestamp link (e.g. “47 minutes ago”), the engine removes the thread from “Unread Forum Topics” while not putting it in a list of topics which you can “Unread.”
The engine doesn’t show you new comments in threads which it has removed from your “Unread Forum Topics” list.
For example, since I navigated to this topic, to post my comment above, via the timestamp link, I have not been notified of breadbox’s, firstlight’s, utasidian’s, 96avs01’s, and schwalbster’s comments via this list. And I can’t get them back on the list, thus negating the whole point of this new plugin. *foreheadsmack*
    I’ve also found. . .
If you click on the topic title—e.g. “View New Posts plug-in enabled”— the topic remains on the “Unread Forum Topics” list and more recent comments are still updated on the this subscription page. As long as you don’t access threads via the timestamp link, I am pretty sure this new plugin will work just like the old “View New Posts” link.

    The (possible) Solution. . .
Use this “Unread Forum Topics” plugin to access the most recent comments via the topic title—NOT the timestamp link—and it might function just like the old “View New Posts” link (as long as you have an unbroken list of topics the engine thinks are “Unread”).

    Thanks for the tip HansG!

I haven’t tested it much yet, but my question is, how can I get this plug-in to eventually work like the old way? How can we clear out all the old threads, so that I at some point I really only see a few new active topics from login to login.

Also a shortcut button to the page on top of the Forum overview would be nice.

After much research, experimentation and consideration, I have decided adulthood is not for me. Thank you for the opportunity.

I am not 100% sure, but it seems as though not all new posts are showing in this plug-in. I’ve been clicking the thread title consistently and not on the post time. Anyone else noticing some missing new posts?

Always the possibility that it’s user error.

I think I may have figured out a way I can ‘un-screw the pooch;’ so to say.
Atop each thread page, there is a red button—”Mark as read” or “Mark as Unread”—which pertains to said list.
The [weird] thing is this button only refers to that very page: page 1, page 2, or page 3 (not the entire thread). So in order to get “read” topics back on your list of “unread” topics (i.e. to have a functioning ‘recent posts’ list) mark the last page of a topic as “unread.” Only then do recent comments appear in my Subscriptions tab as “Unread Forum Topics” again.

On a personal note, before I really understood how the plugin worked, I systematically “read” —i.e. opened the page then closed it—the most recent two weeks of topics.
Now all I have to do is visit every page again and mark them as “Unread.” Then I can have my precious “View Recent Posts” back. *sigh*

@hansgludwig Excellent find! Have no fear @rughty I’ll talk to @bcrider about how we can get a button/link in the User Profile or under the Forum header.

On Friday I was using DuckDuckGo.com to search SB.com (for something totally unrelated to this post) and came across this link. . .
    http://splitboard.com/activity-2/
    @rughty I bookmarked it as my go-to for SB.com.

It must be built into the new engine, b/c the sitemap has no links to it. Anyway, it lists all recent activity; and I mean all: who updated their picture, new members, and. . . Replies and New Posts.
It took some experimentation—which was difficult b/c I happened upon the link at the advent of a 48 hr post doldrum, probably b/c everyone was getting rad over the weekend, which meant there was no recent activity to watch— and here’s how it works. With a little bit of tooling it will function just like the old View New Posts (or better, depending on what you value)
Without logging in, it lists. . .
*—Everything— shows everything recent. And a preview of content. This view can be a bit much.
    *New Members – Self explanatory
*Profile Updates – (In case you wanted to stalk anyone on the forums)
*Updates – Somewhere on your profile, you can update you ‘status’ (like Facebook used to be; “HansGLudwig is. . . “) and this lists all the recent statuses
    *Posts – @cbalke ‘s articles
*Comments – What we say in response to said articles
*Friends – b/c SB.com needs to be more like Facebook :eyeroll:
    *Group Updates – Whatever
    *Group Memberships – Whatever
*New Groups – Taylor Condon has some pretty eclectic groups. Not judgin’, jus’ saying’
    *Topics – Newly created threads
*Replies – What we, users, reply to these threads.

If you log in, Atop the list, you have an option to see the most recent instances where people have mentioned you (the @ + someonesname function).

In general, this takes up more screen real-estate than the old View New Posts, but you get more content. All items are in chronological order. Timestamps refer to how long ago they were posted; not a date + time format. Thanks to @splitboard.com for getting local timezone option enabled; now timestamps mean something (b/c subtracting nine hours was too hard for some PST residents). If you want to find something from a while back, you can “load more” at the bottom.

I think this solves all our View New Posts problems. Not the whiners can gripe about something out of their control like a lack of snow.

I have never used the new activity feature on the last forum, but I’m loving it on this new forum. Thanks @hansgludwig for finding this. I have the link bookmarked so no rush on the button @cbalke
