Forums Boots Phantom Link Lever on Scarpa Alien? Given the extreme similarity between the Backland and Alien rear levers this seems viable, but I’m wondering if anyone has actually tried it and with what result. @sun_rocket November 24, 2019 at 11:44 am #843570 Scott 3 Posts Also curious about this! That being said, I decided to order a set and give it a try after talking with Taylor. There is likely room for improvement, if anyone else has tried this or has ideas, I’d be stoked to hear them. Also, I’ve only been out on some mellow terrain a couple times since trying this, so more testing is needed. So far pretty dang rad though. The Link Lever mounts with minor modifications to the boot. I removed the existing lever including the three screws and base plates on the inside of the rear cuff. I mounted the Link Lever to the middle screw hole and then drilled a new hole below the lowest existing hole. I needed to get some longer screws (M4x0.7pitchx10) to properly seat the link lever to the boot cuff and thread all the way into the base plates. Then I removed the tensioning clip that comes with the Link Lever, this is not needed on an Alien because the cord provides the tension on the lever to lower boot pin. I needed to do some minor grinding and trimming with a dremel and exacto knife to get the cord to run freely through the tensioning clip holes. The outside diameter of the lever clip is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the lower boot pin. This made me nervous having a loose connection in ski mode. I theory, you could press out the pin and find a small bushing to slide in there, but I decided against messing with pressing out the pin. I used marine grade shrink wrap tubing to increase the outer diameter of the lower boot pin so that it matches the outside diameter of the lever clip. Seems to be working (clipping snugly). Other Issues: there is not much room for forward lean adjustment with the existing threaded bar, probably 0-5 degrees of forward lean. This is ok for me as one of the things that bothered me about ski boots was having too much forward lean. I think this could be solved by getting a longer threaded bar. The placement of the Link Lever lessens the tensioning ability of the cord slightly. I think I will move the cord catches up on the cuff to restore the original tension.
