It’s all congealed slimyness and it tastes like paste. Plus it makes you poo like crazy. But on the other hand it gives you mad energy if you can choke it down. But I can’t. I’ve given up on the stuff. Thoughts?? Putting the poo in swimming pool since 1968. July 3, 2008 at 2:28 am #606727 Shep 525 Posts It’s all about the flavors. Anything is better with brown sugar and cinnamon. even toothpaste. July 3, 2008 at 3:54 am #606729 Puff Nattie 73 Posts I hate oatmeal too! I’m convinced it’s related to my days working at the nursing home where they served cold flavorless pasty looking oatmeal. I never tried it but it looked disgusting. The patient’s there hated it too. We had to add atleast 3 packs of sugar to get them to even try it. I think it’s the texture for me, ’cause I love oatmeal cookies. I usually gag down a little and then throw away whatever is left in my bowl. I like to pack soymilk and granola for atleast one breakfast. It’s heavy, but tasty. July 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm #606733 ale_capone 864 Posts I like my oatmeal with brown sugar, all kind of mixed berries, butter, and an egg mixed all together and then baked into cookies. I’ll eat teh slimey mushy stuff too, butnot because I think it is tastey. I believe E-dub and one or two others may have had the pleasure of tasting said cookies made by my girlfriend. It’s raining, I think I’ll get her on a batch now. The trick for me is to make it really watery so I can drink it. No chewing or gagging on paste required! 🙂 July 3, 2008 at 6:18 pm #606735 jcocci 699 Posts Oatmeal is like Clif bars for me; can’t do them anymore. I’ve switched to cream of wheat. July 3, 2008 at 11:55 pm #606736 shredgnar 643 Posts My vote is for Grits (Yeah, I’m from the south bitch) with cheese, salt, tabasco, butter with a egg on top, over easy. Cream of wheat can substitute July 4, 2008 at 1:31 am #606737 Shep 525 Posts Wow. the egg on top is new for me. I like my grits old-skool: butter and processed cheese-food product. Harder to cook (err, clean, actually) in the backcountry though… 🙁 Shep July 4, 2008 at 2:04 am #606738 Monk151 185 Posts oatmeal is a beautiful thing – in fact I had a bowl full of good old-fashioned Scottish-Style porridge oats this morning, little bit o’ brown sugar, fresh blueberries and raspberries…..mmmmmmmmmm – might make a man out of you non-oat-eatin’ ninnies!!! 😆 July 4, 2008 at 10:37 am #606739 nothingmuch 358 Posts I can only eat it outdoors when it’s cold and I’m really hungry. Then I love it. Ditto for cream of wheat, rice porridge, etc. July 4, 2008 at 4:19 pm #606740 spicoli11 288 Posts This tree hugger loves his oats!! Wild blueberries, thimble berries, salmon berries, huckleberries..or even baby devils club make for a nice addition from the “wilds” July 5, 2008 at 12:28 pm #606741 lewmt 570 Posts Nasty! Too much like trying to eat throw-up Breakfast burrito w/good salsa – thats breakfast July 11, 2008 at 4:55 am #606742 fullers2oh 525 Posts the oatmeal is my breakfast of choice especially when overnighting in the BC. i like it with agave sweetener and some maca chai spice mix. also dried fruit. nothing like a nice warm bowl of gruel on a cold morn to get you started, and for those hippies out there now they have hemp oatmeal – yeahhhh! ever had real mexican avena con tres cremas? one time surfing in baja i gave my oatmeal to this old mexican woman and she whipped up the meanest batch of avena i have ever had. July 30, 2008 at 4:49 am #606743 SanFrantastico 1514 Posts Ooops – I forgot to vote in my own poll… Well my thoughts reg. toppings on oatmeal is that they’re really just polishing a turd, so to speak. Why not just eat the delicious toppings in their own right? Or put them on something good, like granola? I’ve been getting deserts like that one really good apple cobbler that rises and you bake it in your jetboil. So good! Now that’s a delicious way to start the day. Or just get good granola and add powdered mild and dry berries. Go crazy and indulge yourself dutchmarc-style and put approx. 4 – 5 raisins in there. Nice! Puff Nattie – My god, institutional oatmeal must be some of the vilest stuff on earth. I’d like my living will to clearly state that I will never be fed oatmeal under any circumstance.
