I had an idea for a tail attachment for those who are using 3/4 length skins or using voile skins without tail clips. I’m thinking that 2 slits could be cut into the skins so that a voile strap could be inserted and wrapped around the ski. Kind of like belt loops in the skin. This way you could start the day without a tail attachment and use a strap if needed. I know that people sometimes use voile straps when glue fails, but has anyone ever cut slits in the skin for better attachment? Any thoughts?

I haven’t ever had tail clips, but have given it some thought. I guess it wouldn’t matter too much if the cuts ripped through as you’d only lose the back inch or so of your skins; however wrapping the skin that way might not prevent it from slipping up because the tail width of the split half tapers as it moves forward. -Also the tail strap would create a bit of drag if the skin is still on the snow there.

Maybe another alternative would be to stitch and glue a little loop of 2mm cord right on the tail of the skin. Instead of tying a chunky knot, stitch the two ends overlapping along the tail edge of the skin so all stays low profile. In a pinch, you could thread some bungee or cord through it and attach with a small loop over the tail corner.

My skins have a 1 inch rip in the edge perpendicular to the direction of travel and the stitching to fix it hasn’t given me problems with snow clods. They are purple so they’ve been out a few times 😉

I have seen a method similar to the one you’re describing, except there was not cutting involved or hardware modification. It’s called the emergency loop. You take a voile strap, place it about 1.5 to 2 inches back from the edge of the tip, and fold the tip over the strap. A friend of mine, new to splitboarding, has been using it on a set of loaner skins I let him borrowed. At the end of the day, you unfold them and toss your voile strap back into your pack.
