Ice season has pretty much past in the North East but I still have a question regarding the swinging of tools while carrying a board. My split is too fat to be carried tee pee style on my current bag and carrying the board vertically makes the back swing interesting. I shift my pack as I alternate swings, this works on easy grade 2 ice but wouldn’t be fun on a long climb. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You really should not be swinging ice tools directly over your head. Ice tools should be placed to the sides of your shoulders to have a more stable position, and to avoid ice chunks flying into your head/face. If you swing tools to the side you should not have any problems with a verticle carry of the board.

I don’t swing tools directly overhead, I just don’t like the postion of my board while I swing. It may be how my pack carries the board but it seems my board ends up in the wrong places.

when you attach your board to your pack try and make it as vertical as possible. when you stand up strait the board should be dead vertical or a litte tilted back at the top so it doesnt hit you head. there is a sweet spot that you need to find where it won’t hit your head and won’t clip your heels. make surre you compress the shit out of your pack w/board to tighten everything up. don’t worry if you smack your board with a tool every once in a while…they like being beaten up.
