Ok huge delay on this TR…

This was from April in Haines, AK. Gavan and I called up Drake (pilot from Deeper) and ventured out into glacier bay national park to try to follow in the footsteps of some of snowboarding’s greats.

    The views didn’t suck:

The snow was as good as one could ask for:

    The climbs were rowdy:

Sweet Video! Definitely worth the watch, and wait. Saw a couple of spots where you could have/should have aired it out… But I know it’s a lot easier said than done, no room for error when you’re out there. Actually getting out there and riding that stuff makes you respect the pros that much more. I always visualize myself tearing up these monster lines, and then I gape them top to bottom afraid for my life. 🙄 Not that you guys did, those were some nice smooth lines you laid down.

Once again, well done and what a winter you two had! Holy bejebus!!!

There’s no doubt we could have styled some of that up a bit more. There is just some feeling out there though that if you fuck up, it’s not going to go well. There were so many times when I was scoping a line I would say “I will air down off that”. Then you get to the top, and look at the air and think “if I air that, I am going to land at the bottom of the mountain int he shrund”. It’s all in your head I think, and we just really didn’t need anything going wrong.

I am itching to go back next year and really step it up. That was one of the more mellow places to go near haines. We scoped a few zones visited in Deeper…and well all I can say is it is humbling.

Xavier was in town filming with SEABA at the same time we were there…as well as every other pro skier/boarder in the world. On our flight out, we flew over the heli zone after 8 days of high pressure and could see some of the stuff that these guys do. Again, all I can say is that watching these lines ridden in a movie is one thing. See tracks down some of these faces with your own eyes is another. I am not even close to the level of pro riders and the confidence and skill they have to shred stuff the way they do is incredible.

    Bump.

Did you guys do any roadside splitting up there? I am headed up next March or April and have been looking at options for day missions from town. I found Three Guardsmen up on Chilkat Pass so far.

Nope it was all on the plane ride. We were in Haines…it didn’t look like the access from town was very good (huge mountains and starting at sea level). Some locals told us they tree ski around town, but I don’t think you can get into the goods very easily. We drove up thru Haines Pass on our way back to BC, and it looked decent, but nothing compared to where you can get with a $400 flight. A sled would help in haines pass as well.

Seriously inspiring, awesome how you captured the sense of the place. Thanks for sharing, man.

What kind of video equipment were you rocking, if you don’t mind my asking? I’ve had an itch to try and document more and have just started trying to sort out the logistics and usefulness of electronics in cold-fuck nowhere.

Between us we had 2 goPro’s,a Canon G12 and a small Sony HD SSD video camera thats a couple of years old.We would have all electronics in our sleeping bags at night.

How long were you guys out there for? I’ve been wanting to hit up Haines for a long time! Maybe next year!

Was the $400 flight to drop you off and pick you up?

we were out for 10 days. The only reason we left was that it warmed up so much and we needed to move spots, so we went back to town to wait it out but we ran out of time before the next weather window. It was $450/hr with drake, so it depends on where you go and how much recon you do. 20 mins and you can be in the goods if you want.

Was there ever any wind there? Video makes it look pretty windless. I have a buddy that wants to do an AK trip and the plane dropoff into the high glacier area is exactly my dream. Being able to combo incredible gravity drops + kite that type of area would … well … its THE dream for me. I’m not going to talk him into making that exploit if the wind potential is not there. Wouldn’t need nuclear – just nice solid 15-20mph(24-32kph) type winds. Much more than that & the snow gets F*cked.

Thanks! Amazing stoke. I’m pretty positive that as well done as everything is – doesn’t come close to doing justice to being there.
