What’s up boys? With winter right around the corner, I’m startin to seriously think about getting a hut trip booked in Colorado. I’m thinkin I would like to do 1-2 nights somewhere with some good terrain to ride but something that also has some safer low angle stuff in case the avi conditions are bad (and they likely will be when I want to go in January). Does anyone have any suggestions for good huts to check out and would anyone be interested in setting up a short trip? I’m gonna have to fly in to Denver so although I don’t mind a drive to get there, closer huts would be preferred. I would consider myself easy going and am always lookin to meet up and ride with new people. Have all my avi gear and training. Overall, I’m pretty conservative in the mountains but do love a steep line when the conditions are right. Let me know if you’re interested in trying to put a little trip together!

I’ve been wanting to check the Broome Hut out and it’s not too far from Denver: http://grandhuts.org

I’m interested but honestly a bit of a long shot as I have a 9 month old and already have a big spring trip booked. What dates?

The Broome hut looks sweet. I’m lookin at Dec 11-13 right now but that would be heavily dependent on snowpack. Hoping for a good November to get some decent coverage. I have a 2 year old at home and 2 more trips booked so I completely understand it being a long shot for you. I’ve just got a nasty itch to get out there sooner than my February trip and have some air miles saved up so I figure it’s worth looking into!

Hey there, you got some options close by Ned, in the front range. Arestua and Brainard open up some varied options, with Eldora as a bad weather back up.
I live right there, so can get some eyeballs on conditions.
If it works out for anyone, I’ll be keen to join up.
I’m really hoping it starts to blow hard and fill in some of the couloirs in RMNP soon.
Weathers changing up he a little.
If anyone’s in the area and wants to get out in the coming weeks, PM me.
    Shaun.

The Broome hut is a very nice hut. The terrain out the door, not so much. There is some good stuff nearby though if the snow is there. December is not very likely for that terrain.

Overall, if you are going to do the Broom hut, I would plan on riding out to the highway, hitchhiking to the top of the pass, then touring back to the hut. If there is a lot of snow, on the way out could be a side trip into First Creek. Which could make for a very fun day. Laps by the hut can be done, but they are short and limited.

There is a new hut opening this winter on Weston Pass. Not sure of the terrain around it as I have no experience. The hut itself looks super sweet though.

    It does look pretty sweet:

Not sure when they will open it up for business, it seems like not until next summer. It looks great for a large group.

Alright guys, at least 2 of us that are planning on Uncle Bud’s Hut December 11-13. There is a good variety of terrain up there to choose from depending on conditions and it’s high enough that hopefully it’ll have some decent snow by then. I’m flying into Denver early in the morning and plan to be at the Turquoise Lake Trailhead by around noon on the 11th. I’ll have to be back down to the trailhead by around 2pm on the 13 but we should be able to get some good touring in on the 12+13. Let me know if you want to go up with us!
