    Yo splitters,

It’s that time of year again where I consider some changes to the site here. I know most of us just focus on the forum but I want to continue to evolve the rest of the site as well. Last year I moved to an open source program that was supposed to make it easy for me to update the site with content and keep it fresh. It didn’t really pan out like I hoped and as a result I didn’t really update the site much. This year I’m looking to take the bull by the horns. I’m excited. 🙂

Please take a look at this practice page I made.

    Is this…. http://web.mac.com/bcrider2000/Site/Home/Home.html (ignore type-o’s and non-liks)

    better than this? http://splitboard.com/

The layout is similar but the new version provides a much needed wider format. The biggest advantage the new format will provide is the ability for me to VERY EASILY update the site. I’ll be able to embed videos, add podcasts, better photo galleries, articles, etc…

    Thoughts?

    Looks good!

I’d look into embedding the forum in it somehow too – IIRC phpbb is embeddable, and that will give a more integrated feel, and people will look around the main site more.

Great suggestion NM. I did a search on “IIRC phpbb” and got mixed results. Any resources where I can learn more about it?

    So, poking around a bit:

it’s trivial to embed phpbb if you run it on the same server as the blog (not the case here, apparently)

Most CMS systems (drupal, etc) have integration plugins or something like that… I guess that’s roughly what you tried when you mentioned some opensource product (some CMS), right? If so I suppose that’s not the way…

Another option is to use an iframe – not real integration, but something.

Yet another is to just fake it – hack in the blog’s template into the forum. There’s no more possibility of dynamic content, but whatever. Here’s an example of how to do that: http://www.edgesz28.com/edgesz28/embedboard.htm

The final idea is to use javascript and make an ajaxish query to load the forum page into some box. That is kludgy though.

Thanks, I always wondered what that meant. 🙂

Helpful to see that it can be done, not helpful in that its a step-by-step for PC…..I’m a Mac snob remember. 😆

I’m one too… In fact in Israel it’s much harder to be a mac snob, so I think I deserve extra credit 😉

Seriously though, he’s just copypasting HTML around. Ignore the dreamweaver and notepad BS, you can do all of that with textedit quite simply.

If you want we can use SubEthaEdit to do this together

I dunno about all this lingo but are you going to have a podcast?
That is an audio thing right?

    Dig the lay out.

Little Truckee Summit and Grouse Ridge look to have good snow where ever they are. 😀

So is that a format you are looking to replace the Forum format? I’ve never really been a fan of Blog layouts and I do like the way the forum is laid out. I think the way it is now is just fine no need for a change unless its amking added features or something in my opinion.

No, the forum will remain the same. The changes are for the rest of the site.

I may ad a template around the forum but the forum itself will remain the same.

It can be audio….but it can also be a movie or a slide show. Its a special download in the format the goes on iPods. 🙂

one thing that would be really nice in the forums is to make it when someone posts a really long url or a large pictures, it gives those things their own horizontal scroll bar in the post, so all the text doesn’t blown out across the page.

i have no idea what this would take on your end, and i assume if it was easy you would of probably done it. just thought i would throw the suggestion in.

    Makin’ some progress. 🙂

    Does this Venture Divide

    Look better than this?
    http://splitboard.com/splitboard-news/venture-divide-sizes

    or this Prior Carbon

    compared to this.
    http://splitboard.com/splitboard-news/prior-carbon-khyber

How about some love for The Ignition?

The pages aren’t finished and I’m not a very good writer but visually I think they look a lot better. Plus the fact that I made them without any help means that when new content comes out I can quickly add it. If all goes as planned I think the site, the users, and hopefully the sport will benefit from it. Holla. 😀

Those new pages look much better but, at first glance the picture of the board on the right seems like it is an ad since it is separated from the text. Not sure if that is a problem or not. Maybe split the difference and have the ads on the right in their box and then put a single box around both the text and photo?

Regarding the overall page width, unless I have my browser window maximized (which I rarely do) the right side of the page gets clipped and I have to scroll sideways.

    Just my $.02

    Thanks for the feedback KD!

Are you referring to the Prior page or Venture page, or both? I put the board images into their own box but I can definitely put them into the text box as well. I ‘ll play with it. Re the stock ad box on the left, I don’t think I’d want to move that to the other side because having it on the left matched the template on the rest of the site.

Re your screen. What size are you using and how large is your browser usually set to? There is a decision I have to make in terms of width and in the past I’ve always gone smaller to accommodate smaller screens. With this go-around I think I’m still going to try and find a happy medium but also lean towards catering to folks with larger screens for a better visual experience. This might frustrate the folks on smaller screens because they’ll have to scroll so I’ll just have to see how it goes.

For your Rouge site, did you use iWeb? Any thoughts or advice if so? Looks like you went on the narrower side as well. Thanks again.

ps. Does that pic on your cover page really qualify as a “huck”? 🙂

These ones show up with the content below the left hand ‘visit our online shop’ and sponsor boxes, instead of the empty space to the right.

    http://splitboard.com/splitboard-news/venture-divide-sizes

The other ones show up fine. I’m stuck with Internet explorer 6.

I like the new page header and layout. 🙂

I think it was with both pages. I think the page looks nicer and neater with the image in its own box, I just had to think about it for a second to realize that it was part of the article.

I have a 19″ screen set to 1152×864. I’m not sure how wide my browser is set but it is just wide enough to fit this forum page. I like to have enough room on the sides that I can click to whatever is behind it quickly if needed.

Yes we used iWeb. Its template are great for giving the site a lot more profesional look but we did run into some limitations with it. The biggest being that every time we wanted to make changes, we had to republish it through iWeb or else the changes could get lost. I think we went with a width of 800px since despite larger monitors, many people still use the 800×640 default resolution.

My partner (Rob) did most of the work so if you have any specific questions PM me and I’ll get him in touch with you. Also, I agree with you about that picture not being much of a huck but we but liked the look of the parchment captions. That caption was put there during development and just never got changed.
