Luckily, everyone made it out OK. Avalanches are a problem even in Southern California. The fact Angelenos usually have to drive 250+ mi to get some Avy-Ed is another. It doesn’t have to be this way. This season, the SoCal Region of National Ski Patrol will offer Avalanche Levels I & II in Claremont, CA (less than 35 miles from Downtown Los Angeles!). We encourage members of the public to attend. It’s a fun class and a great opportunity to meet like-minded people. These NSP versions meet all Avy I & II specs, respectively, and (free for the price of admission) you get a peak “behind the lift lines” to see avalanches from a patrol perspective. It is a unique class which goes above and beyond other Avalanche-Ed offerings. ******************************* Level I Course info Price: $150 (for General Public) Classroom: • January 12, 2016 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM in Claremont, CA • January 14, 2016 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM in Claremont, CA Field work: • January 16, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM @ Mt. If there is a lack of natural snow, we may move the field sessions to either; Lee Canyon (formerly LSSVR) or the Mammoth backcountry. While all instructors are volunteers, not all of us are Ski Patrollers. The SoCal splitboard contingent consistently punches above it’s weight. Don’t make me “the token snowboarder” and let’s keep up the tradition. Remember: When they start saying “knuckedragger” it’s time to fire back with the ACL jokes!
