The new season is has been going off for less than a week and already an avalanche took two hunters for a 400 foot ride over some rocks, knocking one unconscious. Luckily, everyone made it out OK.
Avalanches are a problem even in Southern California. The fact Angelenos usually have to drive 250+ mi to get some Avy-Ed is another. It doesn’t have to be this way.

This season, the SoCal Region of National Ski Patrol will offer Avalanche Levels I & II in Claremont, CA (less than 35 miles from Downtown Los Angeles!). We encourage members of the public to attend. It’s a fun class and a great opportunity to meet like-minded people.

These NSP versions meet all Avy I & II specs, respectively, and (free for the price of admission) you get a peak “behind the lift lines” to see avalanches from a patrol perspective. It is a unique class which goes above and beyond other Avalanche-Ed offerings.

    * Field classes are usually held at Mt Baldy Ski Resort. If there is a lack of natural snow, we may move the field sessions to either; Lee Canyon (formerly LSSVR) or the Mammoth backcountry.

While all instructors are volunteers, not all of us are Ski Patrollers.
The SoCal splitboard contingent consistently punches above it’s weight. Don’t make me “the token snowboarder” and let’s keep up the tradition.

Remember: When they start saying “knuckedragger” it’s time to fire back with the ACL jokes!

P.S. These are ridiculously low prices compared to other offerings and you can sleep in the comfort of your own bed after each session.

Just signed up. Baldy looking good, hope it stays that way until then. Hope to meet some SoCal splitters!

After much research, experimentation and consideration, I have decided adulthood is not for me. Thank you for the opportunity.

Heads up y’all. Avy 2 starts next week. Stoke!

For those who’ve taken a Level 1 Avalanche Course qualifying you to take the Level 2 class… With the anticipated El Nino Winter already beginning, this may be the perfect time to take a Level 2 Avalanche Course. We only offer this course every other year and it just so happens that 2015/2016 is that year. So here are the details.

    Classroom Sessions:
    Tuesday Feb 2nd from 6:00-10:00pm(Clubhouse 66, Glendora)
    Thursday Feb 4th from 6:00-10:00pm(Clubhouse 66, Glendora)
Tuesday Feb 23rd from 6:00-10:00pm(Claremont Manor)
Thursday Feb 25th from 6:00-10:00pm(Claremont Manor)

    Field Sessions:
Sat Feb 6th from 8:00am to 4:00pm (Mt. Baldy Ski Resort)
Sun Feb 7th from 8:00am to 4:00pm (Mt. Baldy Ski Resort)
Sat Feb 27th from 8:00am to 4:00pm (Lee Canyon Ski Resort or Mt. Baldy Ski Resort)
Sun Feb 28th from 8:00am to 4:00pm(Lee Canyon Ski Resort or Mt. Baldy Ski Resort)

    Level 2 Registration Link:

*Please note: Completion of a Level 1 Avalanche Course is a pre-requisite for the Level 2 class

The cost for this course is a great deal at $175. This includes the books and other course materials. Please keep in mind that this course requires the 4 classroom sessions as well as the 4 field sessions. We are looking at having one of the field sessions at the Lee Canyon Ski Resort (formally know as the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort). There may be some additional costs associated with lodging and food for this weekend.

    See you there.
    -Hans
