• Another factor (here in the Wasatch) for additions to, or alternatives to a split is the recent low early season snowpack and ever increasing elevation of the snow line. This situation is making trail-heads very dicey for exiting, assuming there is snow at all.

Early season I hiked with my woody until I could skin in, and then I was often…[Read more]

Agreed, looks like a lot of boot for what I do as well. I don’t do anything with crampons, etc.

In viewing all of the the other videos I was happy to see a Salomon with a walk mode as well. I’ve never used their boots, but I generally have about ten pairs of their running shoes in rotation at any one time. Love the fit and tech. Interesting to…[Read more]

Not a fan of Deeluxe, just looks super bulky. I had a pair many years ago and they look about the same, though I suspect they are a whole lot lighter theses days. Still looks klunky to me.

As far as upper/lower independent lace control, I’m digging the K2 Snow Surfer and of course Burtons have incorporated this for many seasons.

    As far as new…[Read more]

Pallas makes a rad women’s specific pow board. The Jones Storm Chaser 147 and K2 Split Bean look like solid choices as well.

You may have already seen this line-up, but….

    Hey Taylor,

Agreed it seems obvious that BSL is a need to know, yet somehow its not common to publish it.

One thing that I didn’t specifically point out in my review is that I likely could have sized down a half size in the K2 relative to the Burton’s, instead of adding material to the foot-bed. I think dimensionally they’d be a closer match.…[Read more]

I’ve been out in these boots eight days of between four and eight hours at a time.

    WHY:
As a fan of Taro’s style and perspective, I was stoked to see he and K2 were releasing a boot dedicated to his approach to snurfing. I really liked the look of the boot and at the time of purchase the price was right. And…[Read more]

[edit] Just want to add commentary after watching the Silver Fork avy assessment video from UAC – So glad that I backed down from my line in West Deso and deservedly ashamed for even going up that line alone. I could actually hear the Life Flight heli while I was skinning back over to the PP3 area. Spooky, humbling.

    At last a stellar…[Read more]

Not a lot to say about this season as we approach the midpoint. Its been dismal, especially for one who prefers to ride the sunny side of the compass. Getting out remains enjoyable, but its more about being in the mountains at this point. Although I’m sick of hiking out the exits out of fear of serious injury, sorry if my foot tracks…[Read more]

Not to go all conspiratorial about this winter, but doesn’t Heat Miser bear a striking resemblance to someone….

  • Going into this third season on two pairs of Arcs I’ve had it with their climbing bars. So much energy is wasted trying to use the bars.

Has anyone used other climbing bars with these?

  • Voile board and bindings. Their stuff is affordable, proven and their service is very good.

    Christmas Day 2017

    PP3

Approach was better (via Bear Trap Rd) than its been, able to skin from highway
Deep unconsolidated trail breaking ensued and got progressively grueling.

PP3 was fantastic settled windchalk, ranging from 8-20″ inches, bad light and overcast sky with strong gusts on the ridges.
Lots of cracking and slabs in the wind…[Read more]

    Winter solstice BCC

Damn the wind chill was brutally cold on the ridglines today.

Turns were deep, if not a bit on the chalky, sticky side due to the winds. Made four runs and bailed, due to the cold and not feeling well. Was able to skin from the highway to PP3, taking only minor skin damage. Only exit option was hiking and I really wish I was…[Read more]

    Sunday Dec 17 – BCC

Another day hiking with the woody. Just can’t bring myself to haul splitgear cross country to reach snow and the exits – no fucking way.

In any event, wind protected flower patches had refilled with as much as 3-5″ of loose facted wind deposits, with perhaps an inch of fresh. While challenging to ride…[Read more]

    December 13, 2017 Bleak….

After an hour of hiking through the forest with my trusty 1983 Burton Woody I found some BCC flower patches to plow through. Always fun , that stick.

Apart from that, things are dismal… Today the mountains were socked in by the inversion as well….

Take what you can get, enjoy it for what it is. Sliding on…[Read more]
