the tiplocks look sick. Just bought a Jones board and was hoping they would be on the board.

I’m assuming they are currently only aftermarket.

    Hey,
I’m the one that broke one half of the board on a direct hit to a rock last year that Buell mentions.

I bought a used 163 milligram demo board off Jimw last year. I had a couple days on it and really loved the weight and liked the slightly softer flex compared to a jones solution as it is more playful and easier to turn at slow speed.

I’m 5’10” and weight between 180 and 185. I was going at a moderate speed in good powder and took a direct hit to a submerged rock that send me over the bars in a violent crash. It was the toe edge board half that broke right at the insert for the heel lifter pad. The edge or base material didn’t break, only the topsheet/core.

My feeling is that a non-carbon split board would not have broke, but that is just a hunch. A normal splitboard could easily have also busted on that crash. I think all splits are more susceptible to breaking compared to a solid board and anyone buying a carbon board should accept that fact that they are more prone to this type of damage.

That being said, I’m getting another Amplid because I think the weight savings is worth it and it is an awesome ride.

there seems to be plenty of info online about the Union bindings. There is a two page thread on them in this subforum.

never heard of the volkl bindings. they look very basic and cheap. if you’re looking for cheaper or entry level bindings, I’d recommend checking out the voile bindings.

the convenience benefits are not nearly that of resort use given that, while splitting, one still has to undergo the ski-to-board switch

to me this is more reason to want a step in system

Ya know Scooby, I have never heard of Yonex. Looks more similar to the Burton than the K2 kwicker setup.

a little search lead me back here

cool video. thanks for the interview Cbalke.

I’m a proud new owner of a used milligram. Can’t wait to ride it.

Curious why Amplid is not making the millisurf any longer than a 161? I’m sure it is because you can ride a shorter board with that shape.

He mentions that it is wider underfoot, but the tech sheet has them at 25.9 and 26.1mm.

I think both carry options are important in a bc snowboard pack. I typically like to carry in a frame because it sits closer to your body and has better wind resistance. But having a normal board strap option is good for short carries or if the bootpack is short or the top out platform is sketchy.

I haven’t kept up on newer packs, but my kode 20 is pretty light. Dueter and Jones packs are heavier but are well designed and constructed IMO.

DIY custom board straps is always an option.

    Great Posts Buell and Russ.

I don’t think one can emphasize enough the importance of a controlled heelside turn or traverse and the ability to do a jump turn.

I remember Tom Burt saying “have you ever fallen forward on your face on a heelside turn?”

No? – so get your weight over your edge/board and resist that temptation to lean back thinking that you’ll dig your edge in more or slow yourself down.

Enter your line on your toe edge and think of your toe side turn as your safety/control position.

Damn, now I want to go ride something steep. 🙂

    thx for posting Chewbacca.

A huge loss to the snowboard community. He was one of the greats for sure.

I grew up witnessing his rise to fame and greatness. He grew up in a town about 30 minutes from me and I think I first saw him with Aaron Vincent at a vert ramp in Healdsburg. They would come up and just slay it. This was probably 86-87.

We were little groms stoked to get a BS air over the lip and these guys would be pulling 8 foot japans, eggplants on the extension, fast plants, you name it. They were SOOOO good and only 16 or 17 years old then. We would skate together at several other ramps in Marin and Sonoma County over the years.

Then I saw him in the pocahontus film and the H-street skate vids. Whoah- I know that guy!!!

He continued to blow minds throughout the TB videos and his first descents in Alaska.

I’d see him at Sugarbowl quite a bit and we’d share a chair and a doob from time to time.

    RIP Noah.

    Thanks Snurfer!!

We have friends up near Ogden so we may end up that way for a day or two. Otherwise we will tour BCC or LCC mid-week.

Looks like a pretty nice refresh headed your way. 6K snow levels now in Tahoe. Maybe a big storm late next week too. 🙂

I knew this annual Utah conditions thread would be going off, despite low posts on this forum.

Tons of great pics and stoke in this thread.

I think I post in here once a year saying I’m planning on coming out to Utah, but it never materialized until now. 🙂

Headed to Price to pick up a popup camper on Monday, then hoping to tour in the Wasatch and maybe up around snowbasin/powder mountain, but don’t know if there is good BC without lift access up there.

I plan on getting the Wasatch bc map and have a couple days experience there many years ago.

I’m hoping to get suggestions on relatively easy and safe (ish) tours or if anyone is getting out mid-week (Tues-Thurs) and want to take me and my wife out, we would be stoked.

Also, is there anywhere to self-contained camp/sleep in BCC or LCC? Any ski lots allow RV camping or should we look at RV parks in SLC?

Nice long weekend. Did you see Tex make turns? Lucky!!

Pipsqueak is a long ways back there, but awesome terrain. Did an overnight out there several years ago. A day trip would be a lot of miles.

It’s the last on WhitePine. 🙂

Yeah, I need some updates. Nat and I may re-direct our 2 week road trip from Moab to SLC if it looks like the end of the first week and second week of April produces.
We’d be stoked to get out with some of you Utah splitters.

thanks matt. I tried that but the bolt still wouldn’t come out of the hardware. I had to get a stripped screw/bolt puller tool thingy after stripping the allen hole which broke the bolt but at least I was able to remove the hardware.

The bolts that Karakoram/jones uses now are not the same diameter or type that you’ll get with the Voile hooks so I ended up buying the same type of bolts at home depot and making it work without using the voile t-bolts.

Why does Voile have such a small allen hole on those t-bolts. guaranteed to strip.

Anyone want some karakoram clips. 🙂

    Aaron- did you ride Comma?

found winter snow and up to 3 inches of powder at sisters yesterday. got to centerpunch both north facing lines off the two sisters. also some windboard and some crap but all in all pretty fun and smooth turns.

hope this next storm delivers, but looks like these warm storms are the norm now.
