Mine are fubar after about 100 days, all pivot points have tons of slack and the plastic in the lower shell looks like it’s been to hell and back. Not impressed with durability at all. I got a new pair on warranty but put them up for sale immediately and went for Dynafit Speedfits instead.

The speedfit feels way more burly in the shell, has…[Read more]

I’m on hardboots now, used to be on Spark burners back when pins were still a thing. 75kg/175cm and like to try to push my edges hard into crappy snow. Live in northern Norway, we have pretty much all conditions except deep cold smoke.

If you are ever in wet snow that transitions into cold dry conditions as you gain altitude I would say Sparks…[Read more]

  • BC bindings are all (thin) plastic behind the actual bar catch, at least the Rottefella Bc Manual/Auto/Magnum, so they are easily chopped without much loss in stiffness.

There are 3 screws total that touch metal in the bindings, one in front of the bar and 2 behind with very narrow spacing, maybe 2cm or so. I don’t think those are made to drive…[Read more]

This year I switched from Dynafit The One and the first version of Phantoms to fresh 2018 phantoms and Salomon Slab (carbon), which is basically the same boot as the Arc’teryx Procline. I have around 10 days on this setup now and feel I know enough to chip in some comments.

    Fit:
As one would expect, these are low volume, light boots, and fit as…[Read more]

  • I guess a problem is that there are only 2 screws per board cleat in the case of Phantom (and I see no reason to not ride Phantoms, especially on a lightweight setup), so the leverage will be quite high compared to the 4 or so screws that typically hold each end of a ski binding. So the binding mounting zone needs to be really solid, possibly both…[Read more]

I have for sure seen more core shots on Jones boards than other brands. Especially the Ultracraft seems very fragile, but also their other boards seem to have a thinner and softer base than many other skis and boards. I used to work as a ski tuner so I saw a fair few boards and skis come through.

  • Personally, I think there is a massive elephant in the room here.
We talk about trimming grams here and there, and then we happily walk around with more than twice as many holes and inserts in the boards than what we actually use.

And as far as I can make out those big insert things make lightweight board construction even more challenging since…[Read more]

  • Great review! The new bindings look really slick.

I have the first version, and yes they seem to be a bit more prone to icing than for example sparks. I had a couple of tours in Norway where we started in very wet snow/snowfall/rain at sea level and ended up in quite cold temps higher up.

I usually use the binding plate itself as scraper,…[Read more]

  • Thanks to both of you for sharing and I’m happy you made it, from the pictures it looks like a really narrow chute.

  • Thanks for the kind words. I´ll gladly take that beer, or if I pass by the OR area I guess I could buy you $4 microbrew, it will probably be way tastier than the $11 Swedish beer anyway 🙂

  • Pocket for me. More comfortable, and it is protected on the way up as well. It is not uncommon for me to climb in just the base layer, as I usually run hot.

I never understood the point about “external” pockets? Ok if its velcroed or something, but a regular thigh pocket of the kind that are becoming increasingly popular, what´s wrong with…[Read more]

I got my Phantom v1 yesterday and mounted them up. From just clicking in on the carpet flex feels quite good, I thought it would be way stiffer both medial and lateral. Test on snow will be this weekend. I spent best part of last night bolting on an old set of Vertical Ft toe pieces with ski screws, 24h epoxy and everything.

Thanks for the info, hopefully I will get my phantoms before the weekend so I can start chopping the cuffs.

1 get your shells punched out
2 get a good insole to match your foot to the volume of the boot
3 if you have the coin to spare get some good thermoformable liners
then think about chopping the buckle… unless you really are a weight weenie…

I’m new here, but have been a lurker for a while. I just got a pair of One:s, and have started modding them according to this thread. Thank you karkis for all the detailed pictures and information, it has been very helpful!

I have a pair of phantoms (first version, off ebay) hopefully coming next week, I look forward to try the HB route.
