I have about ten days on Aliens now in things from pow to steepish hardpack. My riding preferences sound different than Taylors so I wanted to add my opinions. I’d never rode hardboots before. The gains in touring are obvious, so I’ll talk more about how they ride. It talks a lot about weather in the valley, not just the mountains. In the Cottonwood Canyons, I toured mostly along the Upper Big/Little ridgeline. Silver Fork, Days Fork, Flagstaff. Easy to hit a few drainages in one tour, ride to the car. Wasatch backcountry skiing map is a website with the…[Read more] claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2013/2014 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 7 years ago Missed the Sunday splitfest tour, I worked super late Saturday night and slept in. Went up Grizzly with my roommate that afternoon, we got up into the flats in the graupel thunderstorm, and then saw lightning hit the power lines just in front of us. We didn’t transition just GTFO. claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2013/2014 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 7 years ago I don’t run around stomping every cornice I see, but I do kick them occasionally. My reasoning (some of which was given to me by avy course instructors, so not necessarily “mine”: It’s one of the best tests for testing a particular slopes stability. A couple hundred pounds of snow falling at once packs a lot of punch, similar to what riding the…[Read more] claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2013/2014 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 7 years ago Best touring day of the year for me. Played around in Upper Days, rode out Toledo Bowl. Pretty well bottomless in Days and upper Toledo, lower down on the exit was bouncing off of crust some. The view was good So was the riding claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2013/2014 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 7 years, 1 month ago Went up Pink Pine ridge planning to drop into Red Pine and do some laps in there this morning. Still really thin on that west facing side though, ended up doing a couple laps off the East side of the ridge. Decent snow, crust here or there, dense but soft everywhere else claymond replied to the topic Lib Tech Skunk Ape 165 solid, brand new in the forum DIY and Mods 7 years, 1 month ago I ended up riding it and just keeping it. Thanks for the interest claymond replied to the topic GS Turns on firm chalky snow in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 7 years, 1 month ago I see the speed as an issue more than alot of people because most of my partners, inbounds and backcountry, are skiers that haul ass. Can’t let them smoke me! I wonder why there aren’t any mainstream manufacturers making boards that are stiff, tough, and designed for only strong riders to handle. With splitboarding getting so popular, and…[Read more] claymond replied to the topic GS Turns on firm chalky snow in the forum Re: Re: GS Turns on firm chalky snow 7 years, 1 month ago I think it’s very cool of companies like Donek and Furberg to be bringing ideas to the market that are innovative. And I wish I could support them more, but the price point is too high at this point. It’s a bummer, but the wasatch is rocky, I go through a couple solids a year at Snowbird and usually one split a year. I just don’t have the money…[Read more] claymond replied to the topic GS Turns on firm chalky snow in the forum Splitboard Talk Forum 7 years, 1 month ago Thanks for the answers. Just to be clear, I’m talking about off piste freeride/big mountain style of riding. Carving groomers is fun though, and a lot transfers over to freerriding, I just can’t imagine charging bumps, tree runs, and cliffs in hardboots. Maybe just cuz I’ve never seen anyone do it. As far as size, I ride a board most would…[Read more] claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2013/2014 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 7 years, 2 months ago Anyone lose a smartphone in the Swamp lot? It’s a stiff board that likes hauling ass and strong riders, regardless of length. Never ridden a Hovercraft, and probably never will, dedicated pow boards aren’t my thing. Look at softer, less aggressive boards, maybe a Jones…[Read more] claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2013/2014 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 7 years, 3 months ago Went up Grizzly for a few quick laps on my new-to-me Jones 🙂 this morning. Snow was quite good claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2013/2014 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 7 years, 3 months ago Good turns up around Catherine’s Pass this morning on N-NE-NW faces. The new snow up at higher elevations was slabby, shooting cracks coming with every step. Ended up turning around and picking my way back down the ridge to the top of wildcat. 2 slides on the NE aspect, about 60 feet across, 8-12 inches deep, that we likely triggered remotely(like over 50 feet…[Read more] claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2012-13 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 8 years ago My Nevada list definitely got longer… claymond replied to the topic UTAH 2012-13 Conditions in the forum Avy Discussion Forum 8 years ago @mej wrote: Good trips, dudes. Made the drive from SLC on Friday to check out some of the mountain ranges in the Silver State. Pretty good snowpack, didn’t note any recent avalanches, and incredible terrain. Wish I’d had a sled or more time to set up a base camp closer to the good zones. Load More
